Women Health and Social Welfare

 

Objective:
To empower women living below subsistence level, who are seeking careers to become self-sustaining and to improve their own health and the health of their families.

 

Goal:

1. To provide loans to women who are single mothers because of death of spouse, poverty, or other circumstances, in order to enable them to take courses and become self - sustaining and thereby have the ability to support themselves and their children's education. The location of this project is the island of Bali, Lombok and Flores.
   
   Program description:
   The project involves providing a micro credit loan for a training course. These loans are to be repaid within six months of completion of the course. The women's progress is evaluated on a monthly basis. Type of course is determined though individual interview and assessment. Additional loans for purchase of sewing machines or other equipment to set up business are available.
   
   Rational:
   In Bali there is a large garment industry, which includes soft furnishings as well as clothing. This industry includes both factories and seamstresses working piecemeal at home. Therefore, knowledge of sewing is a great advantage for employment in factories and for home businesses. Mothers who are heads household who have this skill can set up home businesses and have the means to take care of their families at the same time. The income allows them to provide a healthy diet for their children as well as money for rent and school tuition. In Indonesia parents often must pay for part of their children's education.
   
   Evaluation:
   1998-2003 - We have given loans to five women. The women receiving the micro credit loans have completed their respective courses and have repaid their loans. Attached please find some success stories from this program.
   
   2005 - Open Spa School Tuban and have given [...] scholarships.
   
   
2. To provide Spa Training scholarships to 20 women who are from remote villages in Bali, to enable them to start a career in the spa industry, thereby attaining the ability to support their families and improve the welfare of themselves and their families.
